Have You Heard of Baby Bottle Tooth Decay?

Having a child is one of the most exciting yet challenging life accomplishments. As you notice your baby grow into their own personality and begin to understand the world around them, you should also consider the importance of taking care of their most important accessory: their smile! It’s never too early to start thinking about when to schedule a reservation with our family dentist in Bloomingdale or West Loop. During your child’s first visit with us, we may cover the topic of baby bottle tooth decay. If you’ve never heard of it or want more information, read below to find out more.

What Is It?

Baby bottle tooth decay refers to your child’s exposure to sugary drinks such as fruit juice or even breast milk through a bottle, which can, in turn, cause a bacteria buildup in your child’s mouth. You may not realize the effect that sugary drinks can have on your child’s developing mouth, but this type of bacteria thrives on sugar and produce acids that attack the teeth. Baby bottle tooth decay typically occurs in the upper front teeth, although all teeth are at risk of becoming infected.

Long-Term Effects

You may not be as worried because you think that your child will lose those teeth anyway, so it’s not important to monitor them. Your child will likely experience pain and infection if this decay is left untreated. Plus, teeth that are infected or lost too early could result in poor eating habits, crooked teeth, speech problems, or damaged adult teeth.

What You Can Do

In addition to scheduling regular visits with our family dentist in Bloomingdale and West Loop, you can wipe your baby’s gums with a washcloth after feeding. Make sure to clean and massage gums in areas that teeth haven’t appeared yet, and ensure that your child is getting enough fluoride.

Healthy baby teeth will result in healthy permanent teeth!
