Preventive Care & Oral Hygiene Bloomingdale, West Loop, ChicagoIt’s the most wonderful time of the year! For many people across Chicago, the holidays are a time for getting together with friends and family, giving gifts, and eating lots of delicious food! A lot of the food that comes with the holidays may taste great, but it can do some serious damage to your teeth. Here are some treats to beware of this holiday season!

Candy Canes

Candy canes and other hard candy pose a problem for your teeth because of how long the sugar can stay in your mouth. The longer that sugar is on your teeth, the more damage it can do. So next time you’re thinking about sucking on a peppermint, remember that tooth decay isn’t on your wish list this year!

Sugar cookies are definitely delicious and a staple of of the holiday season. But, be careful! Too many cookies can be disastrous for your oral health! Make sure to eat them in moderation and brush your teeth afterwards to avoid plaque buildup!

There never seems to be more chocolate available than during the holiday season. Even though it’s tempting, make sure you’re mindful of how much you’re eating, and whether you’re brushing your teeth afterwards. Chocolate can get stuck on your teeth and cause plaque buildup, so it’s important to brush and floss it off ASAP.

Hot Cocoa

Hot cocoa and other holiday beverages can coat your teeth in sugar that can sit and start eating away at tooth enamel. Limit your hot cocoa intake this winter and always remember to brush frequently!

The important thing about holiday treats is that you eat them in moderation and always remember good oral hygiene! Have a fun & safe holiday season!
