How Often Should You Change Your Toothbrush?

Published on July 28th, 2020

Getting into an oral health routine is a great way to ensure your mouth looks and feels its best. However, don’t forget that you need to switch out your toothbrush every so often to ensure it’s as effective as when you first opened it. The American Dental Association recommends changing your toothbrush at least once every 3-4 months, however, if you notice that your bristles are frayed, it’s a good idea to change it sooner than that. Here is some more important information from our dentist in Bloomingdale.

Why a 3-Month Interval?

Both manual and electric toothbrushes become worn out over time. As you press on your toothbrush to create force, it will cause the bristles to become pushed out and frayed. This makes the toothbrush less effective at reaching plaque and decay, so swapping your toothbrush out for a new one will help restore its effectiveness.

What If I Don’t Change It?

In the case that you don’t change your toothbrush at regular intervals, you may be doing more harm than good. A worn toothbrush head can cause damaged gums and wear away at your enamel. The bristles may also house germs that can damage your mouth, especially if you have recently been sick. Plus, simply put, an old toothbrush isn’t as effective at reaching plaque and bacteria in your mouth.

Our dentist in Bloomingdale and West Loop recommends setting a recurring reminder on your phone that repeats every 3 months. This is an easy way to stay on top of your oral health. If you have additional questions about changing your toothbrush, feel free to reach out to us at Pure Dental Spa today.
