Oral Cancer Awareness Month: What to Know

Published on April 19th, 2019

Every April, our dentist in Bloomingdale and West Loop Chicago want to call attention to oral cancer. As this month is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we think it is a great opportunity to help educate our patients about oral cancer and the warning signs that go along with it.

What is It?

Oral cancer includes cancer that develops in the mouth and upper throat, and it collectively kills nearly one person every hour of every day of the year. Many people are unaware that this type of cancer exists, so now is the perfect opportunity to educate yourself and others. Of people who are newly diagnosed with oral cancers, only 60 percent will live longer than 5 years. This is likely due to the fact that the cancer is not discovered until it has progressed into a later stage.

Warning Signs

Being aware of the warning signs of oral cancer is an important part of staying healthy. If you are experiencing any of the following problems, make sure to visit our dentist in West Loop Chicago or in Bloomingdale as soon as possible:
-White or red patches in your mouth
-Difficulty moving your tongue or jaw
-An ulcer or sore that bleeds or doesn’t heal
-A lump on your mouth, throat or lips
-Consistent pain or tenderness
-Unexpected weight loss

Not all of the above signs are representative of oral cancer, but it is important to get the symptoms checked out nonetheless.

Schedule a Velscope Screening

One way to detect oral cancer is through Velscope screenings, which we offer for only $25! This is something that patients should get once annually. Schedule a reservation with us today!
