Summer Snacks that Won’t Hurt Your Smile

Summer has officially started! The weather is finally warming up, the sun is shining and kids are once again enjoying summer vacation. While it’s tempting to reach for sweet treats like ice cream and popsicles during the warm summer months, these sugary snacks can take a toll on your smile. Instead, our orthodontist in West Loop and Bloomingdale has some snack recommendations that will keep you satisfied without the negative side effects.

A Smoothie

If you’re looking for a refreshing snack without any of the guilt, try making a homemade smoothie. Grab your favorite frozen fruits like strawberries, blueberries or mango and toss it in a blender with milk or water. You can also add spinach (you won’t even taste it!) or peanut butter to help add nutritional value and flavor to your smoothie.

Veggies & Hummus

This snack will always be refreshing and delicious! Hummus is packed with protein thanks to its chickpea base. It comes in a variety of different flavors and it tastes good with veggies dipped into it. Carrots, celery, tomatoes, and cucumbers are all good options! You can also use pita chips or pita bread as well. Crunching on these veggies can help get rid of plaque and bacteria that have built up on your teeth and along your gums.

Nice Cream

Yes, you read that right. Nice cream, or blended frozen bananas, tastes eerily similar to traditional ice cream without all of the unhealthy additives. When the bananas on your counter start to go bad, throw them into the freezer and blend them once they’re frozen. Top it with dark chocolate chips for even more of a treat! Unlike traditional ice cream, nice cream won’t leave added sugars and bacteria on the surface of your teeth.
