What to Know About Canker Sores

Oral health involves many different facets, including the health of your lips and gums. Unfortunately, not all oral health issues can be avoided through consistent brushing and flossing. Canker sores are the perfect example of this, as about 20 percent of Americans suffer from recurring canker sores. If you’re suffering, know that you’re not alone! Our dentist in Bloomingdale and West Loop can help give advice on how to swiftly treat a canker sore.

What Are They?

Canker sores are also referred to as aphthous ulcers; they are small sores that develop inside of your mouth in areas like your inner cheeks, tongue, the roof of your mouth and your gums. Canker sores are often confused with cold sores, but canker sores cannot be spread to other people. Plus, canker sores typically develop on the inside of the mouth while cold sores develop on the outside of the mouth.

What Causes Canker Sores?

Genetics play a role in whether or not you develop canker sores, but other factors include trauma to the inside of the mouth, fatigue, stress or nutritional deficiencies. Our team can evaluate your canker sore development and help determine the underlying cause.

Treatment Options

Avoiding spicy or acidic foods is a good starting point when treating your cold sore. You can also opt for over-the-counter pain relievers and topical anesthetics to help lessen your discomfort. If you notice your canker sore is lasting for more than two weeks, please contact our team!

Not only does our dentist in Bloomingdale want you to look your best, but, more importantly, feel your best.
