Protecting The Foundation Of Your Smile From Gum Disease

Gum disease, also sometimes referred to as a periodontal disease, is one of the most common oral health problems in the nation, estimated to affect one out of every two adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you notice the early signs of this problem, like gum inflammation, bleeding when brushing or flossing, or gum recession, don’t hesitate to call us immediately at Pure Dental Spa. We offer several custom-tailored options for gum disease treatment in Bloomingdale, IL to restore the health of the foundation of your smile.

Why Choose Pure Dental Spa For Gum Disease Treatment?

What Is Gum Disease?

When the soft oral tissues surrounding your teeth become inflamed and tender and begin to bleed when brushing and flossing, these are clear signs that you have early stages of gum disease. Commonly referred to as gingivitis, this initial phase can be reversed with regular cleanings and optimal at-home oral hygiene habits in Lincoln Park. However, once the disease worsens, and bacteria spread beneath the gum line to attack the bone, it can lead to irreversible damage that hinders both the mouth and body.

Symptoms Of Gum Disease

Waiting to see if your gum disease goes away on its own is never a good idea. Should you notice any of the following symptoms, don’t wait to see a dentist. Schedule an appointment with our office right away:

  • Oral sores that do not easily heal
  • Bad breath
  • Red, inflamed and bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Difficulty chewing
  • A change in your bite

Treatment Options For Gum Disease

There are many unique ways to treat gum disease. Depending on the severity, our team at Pure Dental Spa may opt to employ one of the following methods: scaling and root planing, Arestin antibiotic therapy, or soft tissue laser therapy.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a two-step process that we typically recommend to address mild to moderate gum disease. During the scaling process, we’ll thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth, as far down as the pockets of your gums. Then, we’ll smooth out the roots of your teeth, removing any collections of hardened bacteria. This will allow the tissue to integrate with your teeth, protecting the vulnerable roots and stopping or slowing the spread of the disease.

Arestin Antibiotic Therapy

Unlike a pill that exposes your whole body to the antibiotic, we utilize Arestin antibiotic therapy to target the origin of the infection within the pockets of the gums. We’ll place small, antibiotic microspheres into the gum pockets that will gradually activate over the course of several days, helping your body fight off the infection. We may have you come in for a follow-up appointment a week or two after your therapy to see the progress that has been made.

Soft Tissue Laser Therapy

Laser periodontal therapy is similar to the process of scaling and root planing, it just utilizes a concentrated beam of light called a soft tissue laser. It can seamlessly remove excessively damaged gum tissue, leaving only healthy tissue behind, and help combat harmful oral bacteria buildup precisely and effectively. It reduces recovery times, minimizes any bleeding that may occur, and helps tackle more advanced periodontal disease for optimal results.

The Importance Of Treating Gum Disease Early

Gum disease doesn’t only affect the mouth. It also negatively impacts the body if left untreated. This is why seeking professional help as soon as possible is essential. Once inflammation and infection enter the bloodstream, they can travel to various parts of the body, including the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, and other vital areas. If left untreated, gum disease is known to be linked to:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Cognitive disorders (I.E., Alzheimer’s, dementia)
  • Respiratory disease
  • And more
