THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DENTAL CROWNS AND DENTAL BRIDGES

A Cosmetic Dentist in Chicago’s Loop on Dental Crowns and Bridges

By maintaining our oral health, we achieve beautiful smiles with strong teeth and healthy gums. Daily hygiene practices, at-home dental care, and regular dental visits play a vital role in ensuring we prioritize and preserve our oral health. However, despite our best efforts, patients can still encounter dental injuries, tooth decay, and tooth loss.

Sports injuries, poor dental hygiene, drug use, etc. can all lead to broken, chipped, or otherwise damaged teeth. Tooth damage not only leads to other dental problems, but also negatively impacts the appearance of a person’s smile.

There are several cosmetic dental procedures that aid in smile restoration, including dental implants, crowns, veneers, and dental bridges. Dental implants are permanent replacements for individual teeth which require anchors to be inserted into the jaw bone. Dental veneers are permanent coverings which conceal damaged teeth.

The differences between crowns and dental bridges are that crowns are meant to “cap” or cover natural teeth, similar to veneers, while dental bridges are short lengths of false teeth that fill gaps left behind by missing teeth.

Dental bridges are made for patients with missing teeth who either cannot have implant anchors placed into the jaw bone, or dental bridges simply make the most sense for their dental needs. Dental bridges keep existing teeth from shifting out of place, just as implants do. They also help improve speech and chewing issues that can result from missing teeth.

Dental bridges are set into place by two crowns that are placed over what are called the abutment teeth. Abutment teeth are the natural teeth which sit on either side of, or near, the opening of the missing tooth. The four main types of dental bridges are cantilever, implant-supported, traditional, and Maryland.

Dental crowns are dental caps that are placed onto existing teeth, usually to correct appearance or strengthen them so as to avoid extraction. Dental crowns may be used to fix chipped teeth, fractured fillings, as an aid for correcting bite misalignment, and more. They are often used in root canal therapy, as well.
