LIFE AFTER WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL

Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery

Impacted wisdom teeth are not only uncomfortable, they can have an adverse effect on the rest of your teeth. Getting your wisdom teeth taken out gets rid of symptoms like headaches, jaw pain, and infections. Wisdom teeth removal surgery is just the beginning, though. If you’re having your wisdom teeth taken out, you should be prepared for the days after surgery, as they are crucial to your well-being.

Day One (Day of Surgery)

You may, unfortunately, feel some discomfort directly after surgery. You will be prescribed some pain medication to deal with this. We would suggest taking this pill with a small amount of food. This will reduce your chances of getting nauseous. The foods you eat should be soft, room temperature, and soft. Do not attempt to suck anything through a straw for a few days, as this can lead to dry sockets. Also avoid small or granular foods which can get stuck in sockets.
Rest as much as you can after surgery. Keep activities to a minimum. Be gentle when transition from either sitting or laying to standing. Do not touch, probe, or otherwise disturb the site of the surgery. The only thing that should touch the surgery site is gauze that will help stop the bleeding. Bite down gently on the gauze and make sure to change them around every 45 minutes.
If you are a smoker, do not smoke during the healing process. If you exercise regularly, refrain from exercise for a few days following the surgery, as exercise can increase bleeding and swelling.

Day Two (Day After Surgery) & Next Few Days

Keeping your mouth clean during the post-operation time period is paramount in avoiding infection. You can keep your mouth clean by gently rinsing your mouth out with warm saltwater at least three times a day. When brushing your teeth, be sure not to hurt yourself by brushing too hard, but don’t be afraid to brush. Keeping your mouth clean will help reduce the risk of infection.
There will likely be some discomfort the day after surgery, including stiff jaw, sore throat, and dry lips. The site of the surgery may also feel bruised. Refrain from too much activity and stick with soft, malleable foods that won’t get stuck in sockets. You will receive a small syringe after surgery that can squirt water and clean out food from sockets.
