DO I REALLY NEED TO GET MY WISDOM TEETH REMOVED?

Some see it as a rite of passage before leaving for college, while others dread the day they will undergo the procedure that makes their cheeks swell up like a chipmunk, but how necessary is getting your wisdom teeth removed? Well, while each case varies, the truth is wisdom teeth removal prevents severe dental problems in the future. Wisdom teeth are otherwise known as the third molars and often come in impacted or misaligned. They tend to emerge after the jaw and mouth have finished growing – usually when a person is between the ages of 18 and 25. By this time, the other teeth have filled the mouth and there is rarely enough room for this extra set of molars to grow in properly.
Historically, this is why many dentists recommend that you have your wisdom teeth removed because about 75% of the time, these molars can cause some sort of complication. But as of late, this procedure doesn’t seem quite as crucial. One in four wisdom teeth grows in perfectly healthy, unobstructed, and disease-free so extraction isn’t necessary. Still, however, there is not sufficient evidence as to whether it is best to remove these healthy teeth or let them be. Early surgery can be risky but waiting too long can lead to a more difficult and complicated surgery down the road.
Long story short, some healthy wisdom teeth are totally fine to keep as long as you and your dentist keep an eye on them. Listen to your dentist because they know best. If they recommend that you get your wisdom teeth removed, it is in your best interest to do so. But if they say your third molars can be left alone for a while, that is perfectly okay as well.
